Argumentation from Evidence -Sample Lesson and Adaptation
Agenda
Opener: Direct vs Indirect Light and Parallax. Draw or describe observations.
1. Argumentation from evidence - what is this practice and why is it so important? (quick review for newcomers)

2. Reviewing the continuum of a sample lesson adaptation.
ISLP- continuum
ISLP - lesson adaptation argumentation
Rate some other examples
Does argumentation have to be a class discussion? Does it have to be a debate/argument/opposing sides?
Where is argumentation in the PEs, performance expectations? Should you only engage in argumentation from evidence if they are explicit in the PEs?
Can you think of some lessons that you can adapt this way? (Find argumentation in PEs)
4. Establishing Classroom Discussion Norms - Poster Session
5. Teacher's practice a class discussion using argumentation from evidence. Question: What causes the Seasons. Students begin session by drawing their mental model of the causes of the seasons. Evidence is then examined to determine which model/claim has the best evidence to support it.
4.Teacher's define science goals and establish wonder questions/ storyline/ anchoring phenomenon for your unit/semester/year.

4. Establishing Classroom Discussion Norms - Poster Session
- Productive discussion norms,
- Discussion participant options: add on to an idea, ask clarifying questions, respectfully disagree
- Ensuring participation - think-pair-share, pencils -in, T-charts with post it notes
