Science Fair vs Science Convention
Science Convention is where scientists share their research
vs
Science Fair implies contest
Science Fair implies seven step scientific method-
Why use 7 step scientific method
Why not use 7 step scientific method
- Lets allow for students who want to use scientific method but not require it. Our science convention packet can be simpler. We really want kids to explore and share. We need a packet to provide guidance but it can be more simple – what did you want to learn, what did you do, what did you learn? Can add more requirements for older students but still follow the basic format.

Science Fair implies contest
Science Fair implies seven step scientific method-
Why use 7 step scientific method
- It is the traditional model presented
- It helps prepare for junior high
Why not use 7 step scientific method
- Students cannot follow scientific method independentally. (It is not taught until fifth grade. )This is a homework project and therefore we should not require what they cannot do on their own.
- CIRSI implied young children can make predictions but not hypothesis – more research needed? Also implied 7 step method should not be used at elementary level
- From fifth grade experience – Shalon, SciTrek and I all taught scientific method and still students were unable to do this
