Understanding Modeling in NGSS
Science and Engineering Practice - Developing and Using Models
A model is an abstract representation of phenomena that is a tool used to predict or explain the world. Models can be represented as diagrams, 3-D objects, mathematical representations, analogies or computer simulations.
Part 1: Examining Modeling Lessons
1. Click on the link below and read the four lesson adaptations on modeling labeled A-D. List which lesson fits each level on the continuum. (For example you might right A next to level 1).
Next discuss your answers with your group and come to a consensus. What is the difference between the term "model" in every day speech and how it is used in the context of the NGSS Science and Engineering Practices?
2. Describe a lesson that you already do or that you want to do and how you would adapt it to be a level 4 modeling lesson. (There is a first grade lesson on modeling the causes of day and night by the NSTA here.
Part 2: Sample Lesson - Modeling The Causes of The Seasons
1. Why do most people believe that the seasons are caused by the Earth being closer or further from the sun? (and what does this tell us about the importance of modeling?) THINK, PAIR, SHARE.
2. What evidence has most convinced you that the seasons are NOT caused by the elliptical orbit of the earth around the sun? PENCILS IN
3. In our last session on argumentation (argumentation and modeling go hand in hand) you made and initial model of the cause of the seasons based on your understanding at that time. You have learned more since then. Today we will first use globes and lights to make a physical model of the Earth-Sun System responsible for the seasons. We will compare with and without a tilt. Then you will make a new paper model. This will be your semi-final version of your model. Then your colleagues will use our post-it note evaluation system to provide you feedback which you can take into account before completing your model. Take a look at your original drawing and note what has changed.
