USING TECHNOLOGY FOR DISCOVERY
Discussion - Weighing the benefits and disadvantages of technology - when is technology the right choice?
What does it offer? fun, repetition, self-paced, immediate feedback, an experience that couldn't happen another way, allows for disovery. The best tools offers most of the above.
Proposal - sky watching day several times a year - look at clouds, shadows, observe moon, use sky-view app, measure light using uv meters, etc...
A. Space Systems
Using moon observation and sky view app for discovery
1. Where is the moon in relation to the sun? What phase is it in? What phase will it be in next week at this time? Where do you think it will be in relation to the sun then? Will you see the moon tonight before you go to bed - why or why not?
2. Where are the planets? Which ones are close to the sun right now? Will you be able to see any tonight? Are there any you definitely won't see? What part of the sky would you look at to see a planet and why?
3. Will you be able to see the constellation Orion tonight? Why or why not?
4. What other questions might you be able to answer using the skyview or moon phase apps?
B. Physical Science
Using slo mo feature on ipad or phone camera for discovery. 1. Using the slo mo setting video tape as a drop of colored water is released into a bowl of calm water. View the video. What do you notice? 2. Let the water settle. Record again using two colors and two droppers to release two drops about a few inches apart at the same time. View the video. What do you notice? 3. What else could you use the slo mo feature to investigate?
C. Life Science
pluggable digital microscope and photoshop 1. Look at a variety of seeds under the microscope. How are these seeds dispersed? Do any of them have anything in common? 2. How could you organize the seeds and why? 3. Do any of the seeds have structures similar to man-made items? Describe. 4. What else could you investigate using the digital microscope?
D. Other suggestions - does anyone have any suggestions for technology tools/apps (preferably that we already have or can upload for free) that are useful for student DISCOVERY?
Thursday August 17 2017 Examining Progression, Creating Convergence, and Developing a Storyline.
PART A: What does convergence mean? How is it different from integration? Why does CIRSI advocate convergence? To what extent should we aim for convergence?
